The History of Chet’s Car Care Center

1968 was a pivotal year in our history: America was still ensnared in the Vietnam War, Martin Luther King was taken from our midst in April and Bobby Kennedy would follow in June.

That year, Chet Hermansen, a young family man, chose to leave the security of a “regular job” to own and operate his own Standard Oil filling station on Packers Avenue in Madison.

After a few years, Chet got to know his north side neighbors and many long lasting friendships began. Chet, now a father of three, came to realize that many of his customers were searching for a reliable place for maintenance and repairs for their vehicles.

In 1984 Chet opened the original Car Care Center down the block from the gas station. Chet was committed to providing the services his customers had asked for, and since the business flourished, Chet sold his gas station. No longer tied to the gasoline commodity, Chet will tell you today that “SERVICE IS OUR ONLY BUSINESS.”

Now in semi-retirement and still visiting with friends at the shop, Chet has turned the business over to his son, Eric. Eric’s mission is to continue the family legacy of customer-first service.
